I was captivated by the enduring allure of the iconic Australian mullet hairstyle while wandering the streets, unable to resist capturing its enduring presence. Originating in the 1970s and 1980s, mullets gained popularity in rural Australia, influenced by cricket legends like Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh. Despite falling out of mainstream fashion in the 1990s, mullets persisted in certain trades and recently experienced a revival, embraced by a new generation for its ironic and extreme appeal. The Kurri Kurri Mullet Club in the Hunter Valley even hosts mullet festivals. Today, mullets remain a nostalgic symbol of Australia's rural heritage and irreverent humor, inspiring both parody and celebration.
“They’re in. They looks cool. It’s a way of having long hair without it looking weird for a boy. I think with curly hair goes well for boy or girl. I think that if you don’t keep it too long or too short when you get for just right it’s pretty cool”. Pasquale, 13 years old, he’s has this hair cut for 9 months. “It’s an easy hair style wear. No gel or anything needed”. Max, 19 years old, he’s has this hair cut for 5 years. Photographed in East Vic park, Perth, Australia.
Suits my face well, makes me look edgy and my whole style has changed. More boyish, feel like I’ve found myself in the hair cut. It’s easy to manage. Loots better the longer i leave it. I cut my own hair and recently cut my partners hair, I can only do the one style of mullet that I have and so did that to his. He hates it on him. Now we match”. Indi, 25 years old, she's had the mullet for 18 months. Photographed in Lathlain, Perth, Australia.

I cut it myself. It’s so comfortable as a hair cut. Also practical as it protects your neck from the sun. Also think it suits my face and is good for Curly hair as it’s hard to manage. Think hair makes a person, this makes me.” Charlie, 24 years old, he’s has this hair cut for year and half. Photographed in East Vic Park, Perth, Australia.
“I was Inspired by Yolandi from DIE ANTWOORD. I love their music and asked the hairdresser for something similar and this is what I got. My mum says ‘Stop doing that to your hair’ as she doesn’t like shaved hair as it’s more masculine and she’s old fashioned. A typical mum.” Shanice, 22 years old, she’s has this hair cut for 3 months. Photographed in Perth City Centre, Australia.
